The days of leading the introduction on digital basic capabilities are gone. CDOs are more and more often becoming transformation leaders, not just focusing on transforming their organizations, but on building new business models to satisfy today’s customer demands.
Most organizations need a CDO because it is the best and quickest way to embed digital in the organization’s strategy. However, the reality is that the CDO function must disappear in the midterm, as this will be the true measure of their success. CDOs are compensating the lack of digital acumen among CEOs, but the CEO role needs to evolve fast or to foster their CDO’s development into CEDO’s before replacing them.
In 2017 Chief Digital Officers will have their own space at DES. This will give them the opportunity to talk with primus inter pares colleagues about specific issues addressed within their field.
