Benefits of using a private VPN in your company

Benefits of using a private VPN in your company

Before talking about the benefits of using a private VPN we should know what it is. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. And they refer to the technology that allows creating a private network that connects two internet points. Thus, two separate teams can work as if they were together. Meaning they can share resources and speed up when in need of sharing information. VPNs are used both in office or domestic networks.

How does a private VPN work?

Even though the explanation of what VPNs are, understanding their functioning is not so simple.
When you use a public network to connect to the internet, your data travels together with those of other users through a kind of virtual highway or information tunnel. There is no protection for this data.

A private VPN encrypts your data and makes others see them as worthless garbage. Therefore, they stop being attractive to hackers, etc.

Phases to encrypt the information through a VPN

1. Authentication

Let’s start by saying that data on the internet travel in packages. During the authentication phase, your data pack grows. It does so because new data is added on to it.  Data regarding the computer from which it is sent, for example. Information that guarantees the integrity of the package.
Once this rich package is created, your computer starts a dialogue with the VPN server. This is the moment when this server asks for credentials that prove the real identity of the user.

2. Tunneling

The second phase of the process of operating a private VPN is tunnelling. During the previous step, you have already verified who you are and that your data can travel to the destination device. At this time, the VPN creates a tunnel so that the data you want to send travels through it. It is a safe path through which only authorized data goes. But those data are not encrypted yet. That happens during the third phase.

3. Encryption

You may be using one of the many free VPN services that exist in the market. In that case, before sending your data through the open tunnel, you must encrypt them. Because a public VPN authorizes travel through its tunnels to data from different users.

What are then the benefits of a private VPN

Remote access

It is very common to use a private VPN to give access to a private network to a user who is not physically in the same place where that network is located. This is called remote access. When accessing the network through the VPN, the remote user can use it as any of the people in the office who are there.

Site to site

VPNs are also used so that the network of a company with different branches is homogeneous. Thus, the work processes are the same in all the branches, resources are shared and the response time is optimized.

Nowadays, being able to have remote access to a workstation means a more efficient time management. Costs are reduced and employees satisfaction rises. Meaning the company’s results will be bigger.
